Cuando muere su madre, la joven Tristana se va a vivir con su tutor, el libertino aristócrata Don Lope, que no tarda en aprovecharse de ella. Pero a medida que crece, Tristana comienza a hacerse valer y busca su independencia. Entabla un romance con el artista Horacio, lo que disgusta a Don Lope.
