This film definitely succeeds in portraying the madness, claustrophobia, and the private "wars" each of the prominent Nazis had to face during the final hours in the Führerbunker. Great use of light and shadow. I enjoyed the truly dark, deadpan humour. I appreciate handling this topic, as it takes some emotional strenght to face those dark moments for humanity - especially that the film comes from a German director.
Film that lies in the night brings the light from outside and reveals the surface of the forms. It is not showing, but revealing because Schlingensief chose to remain in the dark side so that he could avoid the illusion of the light and realizing that the function of perception is to capture the feeling of the atmosphere. The remain is the roaring bomb and grotesque screams.
Reasonable nightmare. How could this be different? Schlingensief can´t stop repeating, but this time with variations. Hence, this is some kind of healthy elaboration. I would also be Schlingensiefian if I was a German. From "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" to "Ficken! Ficken! Ficken!"
Should probably be titled "an alternate mad view of Hitler's last hours for those who hate the movie "Downfall" instead as title "100 years.." make one think it is a kind-of biographic documentary about Hitler's life and the years after his death made as a celebration to his 100-year birthday. Anyhow, it is a kind-of sick perverted take that sadly never takes fire or is sick enough. It ends up being mostly annoying.
liked it. It pokes fun at the too much seriousness of its characters, only to reveal their frustrations and egotism. Hence they become pitiful caricatures that they were. About any cinema standard is discarded (and that's not a mark of amateurism but it's intentional). It makes fun of Wim Wenders, who walked out at one of director's movies(Menu Total).
Got mixed feelings about this. Good to see the Fassbinder ensemble in action in this claustrophobic deconstruction of the 'lebensraum' semantics of the Reich. The bunker paranoia is conveyed well. On a less positive note the parodic excess does an injustice to the issue of how one should tackle Nazism with distantiation effects (i.e. Syberberg) and often borders on the ludicrous. Bold, but only minimally rewarding.
Ultimately been won over despite the claps and the genre it's set in. Clearly we have a Blair Witch Project in Hitler's bunker here. Maybe history might return one day to this for its found-footage experiment. And to finally mention the hilarious joke 'Papa' next to the blow-job (who didn't laugh ?)
I went to Schlingensief's show at PS1 because these films are so decadently compelling. While the other work is more performance art-like, the films conjure for me Fassbinder, Herzog, George Kuchar, early Warhol, and even Paul McCarthy videos. The Hitler films attempt to degrade the difficult historical memory of Germany having spawned a monster. Would we could toss to Schlingensief Cheney or Kissinger as subjects.
