Our take

Juliette Binoche gives a performance of immense emotion in this expansive film. It oscillates between domestic drama and war film, all the while retaining an immediacy with its characters and a deep-felt sensitivity to the world. This is cinema as humanism, and a drama of great emotional resonance.
