I would say this is a good film at any time. No one can deny this shameful period of American history; however, I hate when I'm being emotionally manipulated by a picture. There is no subtlety in this whatsoever and that is what I was bothered with from the beginning until the very end.
It clearly is McQueen's most political film, true Oscar-bait material (and rightfully so) that sure must be close to the heart of the director. An outstanding cast, efective script and beautiful cinematography allow for a nicely paced story that just grabs your attention at every single scene. After three films, McQueen is already one of the best, but I hope he doesn't forget his indie origins.
as a plastic artist, it's natural that mcqueen has a kind of cold aproach he puts in everything he creates, which worked beautifully in hunger and shame. 12 years a slave, however, as an 'epic' film, requires a warm touch, which mcqueen wasn't able to provide. it ends up failing to deliver the kind of emotion the film needs
A simple story well told with a powerhouse performance from Ejiofor. Tonally it is perfect, it is not overly sentimental and retains an "art house" edge where it could have descended into awards fodder. The casual racism on display here is just as shocking as the violence (where it doesn't hold back) and another excellent turn from Fassbender, surely the best actor of his generation?
A film more political than substantial, painfully mono-dimensional in its portrayal of brutality. McQueen finds himself in the perfect spot, twisting the arms of a film academy, emotionally blackmailed and with a longlasting debt to the black community. Perfect PR campaign to harvest golden accolades. Even actors, caught in a clash of accents that brings no revelations, were quickly shrined for political correctness.
12 Years A Slave ist ganz anders: Düster, meditativ und in vielen Passagen sogar poetisch...
