Our take

This hidden gem from Juan López Moctezuma, an overlooked director who also co-produced El Topo, is one of the weirder Edgar Allan Poe adaptations. The unsettling mood slowly grows into what can only be described as sumptuous carnage, as the film finds a strange beauty in its characters’ madness.
