I love how this three-episode story does not ultimately give the viewer the most pleasing outcome, but the most painful and realistic one. It's a theme dear to my heart which is treated very well here. And such a mesmerizing setting! The beautiful animation enables this in a way that real life never could have you experience.
5 centimeters per second is a bittersweet labor of love, with adolescent melancholy presented as empathetically as you'll ever see alongside scenes of pure #nightbus (Burial had just released his s/t when this movie was released fwiw). Rewatching it now doesn't have the same emotional effect it had when I first watched it some years ago but it still left a lump in my throat, and the effort in the art still impresses.
