7/64: LEDA AND THE SWAN

7/64: Leda mit dem Schwan

Directed by Kurt Kren
Austria, 1964
Short, Avant-Garde

Synopsis

Kren´s film 7/64 – Leda and the Swan is also based on a Muehl Materialaktion. The almost convulsive use of juxtaposition reappears here, but the captured gesture assumes a more erotic sensitivity, though the “action” itself was primarily a gradual destruction of the erotic.

Our take

This silent and frenetic short from Kurt Kren and the Viennese Actionists highlights the destructive, disturbing undertones behind the iconic Greek myth. The final (unfinished) performance is pungent and problematic, pushing at the very boundaries of corporeal transgression with no holds barred.
