A reasonably entertaining film, which doesn't rise very far (if at all) from the usual tropes of the genre. As long as you're expecting a hard-boiled crime-not-crime thriller with a few ridiculous (indeed, almost cartoonish) plot twists and turns, you won't be disappointed. By the same measure, if you're not a fan of snoop-snoop bang-bang action with an 'Eddie Murphy meets Mel Gibson' protagonist, keep your distance.
Thoroughly enjoyable South Korean action thriller that admittedly has a better beginning than an end. It's much more interesting when the focus is just the poor decisions and repercussions of one man, though the addition of a physical villain does not ruin the film. The acting is great, and the action is even better. Fantastic ride.
Initially this movie presented a fast-paced attention grabbing plot but the rest of it fell into a series of diminishing returns. Thankfully, it was straightforward and while overdone, easy to follow. There are several excellently done "edge of your seat" moments that happen throughout and manage to keep your attention for most of the experience. The actors are convincing and manage some nice occasional humor.
We [and there's five of us who watched this] give one star since it's impossible not to give any. A typical, usual Korean "genre" accomplishment where the surprises are predictable and the production value is oh so-impressive. MUBI was born to cater to auteur cinema fans and is dishing out crap.
Good is not great. Competent is not exceptional. This film is a good example of the frustrations I have sometimes with South Korean films. The filmmakers on the peninsula have learned much from their cousins across the water in Japan. But the stainless-steel finish of this film can't hide the anemia of its reliance on plot and tone without the poetry. Wonderful exceptions, thankfully, come our way annually.
A sometimes exhilarating and sometimes derivative thriller with a juicy set-up that is sadly squandered in the third reel. But everything up to that keeps this movie rolling with confidence and purpose. The acting is pretty spot on and while the tone veers close to dark comedy a bit too much for my taste I enjoyed it nevertheless.
