4.5 A family has been evacuated from the war just to find themselves trapped in the mountains of Hokkaido where they are being terrorized by a sadistic, former army officer and villagers spurred on with lies and intrigues. A great moral tale that draws parallels between the Japanese war crimes in China and the terrors happening in a small secluded Japanese village. Strong female characters & a haunting soundtrack.
Kind of Japanese STRAW DOGS where rednecks terrorize a poor family, but with a wider social commentary. Peckinpah's violent rednecks are just violent rednecks; Kinoshita's violent rednecks are summer-1945 Hokkaido violent rednecks, driven to lunacy by a years of war deprivation and the village headman's sadist son whipping them into a fury against the Toyko refugees living in a cottage outside town. Cracking good.
