That flow/momentum! Takes a cautious, blank slate of a character & makes him real before our eyes. It’s a joy to watch him come up, because we’re with him. A film that does that, that's well made, I’ll gladly get swept up in, & with Audiard there are these little pointed inclusions, little subversions, every detail thought through for implication.. Brilliantly acted. Stylish, empathetic, lyrical storytelling. 3.75
Audiard has been on a precipitous rise ever since this movie was released, and the good thing is he's only improved. What's most interesting about the way this movie works is how it manages to create a wide range of engaging characters without ever making a space for our sympathies with any of them to be unproblematic.
After having postponed watching A Prophet for years I finally took the time to see it. After hearing people talk about it and reading reviews on it, I was massively excited for this film. What I found was a very well executed film yet its story seemed like something I had witnessed a thousand times before. Visually the film didn't do anything spectacular either. All in all it was good, just not as great as I hoped.
An engrossing French prison drama that also has a some interesting racial angle, where the protagonist Malick is part Arab, part French, and has to choose where his allegiances lie when having to work as the underling for Corsican kingpin Cesar Luciani, played by Neils Arestrup in a scarily compelling performance. There's never a dull moment, and Director Jacques Audiard instills great humaity in all his characters.
