This plays like a made-for-TV movie because it is a made-for-TV movie from 1978 but it documents a transitional time in history when LGBT rights in America were developing, and showing this story on network TV helped raise people's awareness. Gena Rowlands is brilliant, one of America's greatest actors, and she carries this with grace, subtlety and range of emotion rarely seen in TV movies of this era.
Quintessential LGBT film, not to mention, MADE FOR TELEVISION, 1978. The fact that this was even made and screening ON TELEVISION is astonishing. I shed a tear or two. Gena plays a lesbian mother taken to court over the custody of her child. Confronts social-sexual politics like a ram, context 1978. So bold. Film still taken from my 16mm copy. Easily found on YouTube. Should be added to your must-watch immediately.
