Wow. This movie hits you like a block of concrete. In each episode the main characters are searching for something, be it revenge and recognition or love or money, but always the search ends up with violence, the defining feature of the world these people are living in. Hardcore critical realism.
8 - Less a film about a nation smothering its citizens than one about said citizens lashing back like people realistically would; in wild, enraged thrashings destined to cause more harm than good. There is very little catharsis here, and even fewer prospects for a better tomorrow.
brilliant images, surreal humour, a great moral core. starts off in blazing, cathartic fashion but the anthology format jolts the flow - these characters and stories are drawn with complexity and deserve more time. western critics seemed all too happy to see this as a critique of modern china, but there is warmth and humanity here too. will also make you want to eat apples on a bike with a coat like dahai's.
Jia takes a portmanteau approach and depicts the dehumanising shadow of China's recent socio-economic transformation. He does so with stylistic élan, mixing up genres and providing a vivid canvas of urban and rural landscapes. This is a world that breeds sociopathy and where the innocent find themselves compelled towards acts of violence and despair. The entire piece is propelled by a sense of urgent rage.
Interesting study and reflection on modern China. Powerful and brutal at times, but unfortunately so is the reality... I really enjoyed the story, characters and how subtly they connect while each of them is very different and brings new elements to the experience. The acting is minimalistic, so is camerawork which seems to be a good choice, as the film's approach is very down-to-earth and direct. Great!
A neorealist vision of modern China. Underneath its skycrapers and neon lights, real China is a fast-growing giant with feet of clay coming to terms with the devil in the detail of its pact with its capitalist nemesis. Zhangke faces the beast pointing the finger at wide-spread corruption, alienation, nihilism, depravation, inmorality and shows his characters in state of shock, spreading violence as a coping mechanism
