Thought number 1: I feel this is Gender for Dummies with a blockbuster appeal that will fulfill its purpose - explaining gender crisis to a larger contemporary audience. Thought number 2: It's blockbuster drama with all the predictable cries and yells - and the female foursome does a OK job. It's not a statement, nor outstanding: it's popcorn with gender syrup.
Fanning and Watts were fantastic as they tried to make the best of this story, but the film itself wound up feeling very thin. I couldn't help but feel this was a desperately liberal film tokenizing a marginalized group in hopes of praise. Oh, and the scene where Ray comes home having been beaten up was not at all funny.
Story-wise, I like the ideas that this film generates and the overall execution of those ideas, but when it gets down to the nitty gritty of transgender/transition, there isn't a lot of depth -- just that certain things must happen, like the signing of papers and administration of T. The acting by the well-rounded cast is indeed good, but the story does fall flat at critical points that make it kind of blah.
