A real triumph of mise-en-scène. It's stunning. Much of the story sort of dissolves into the background, as the visual and auditory elements have a tendency to hypnotize (this is not a liability). The power of metaphor is pushed right to the limits of good taste, but the tightrope act is ultimately pulled off w/ aplomb. Much of Amos Gitai's subsequent late-80s work suddenly seems like it has been sorta cribbed.
A very very beautiful and well directed film with a really driving plot. However, the political undertone (or should I say overtone) was VERY heavy handed, especially towards the end. At the end of the day, a nearly great film and I really liked it. Deserves a rewatch.
