Ratings & Reviews

  1. Warren Spratley's rating of the film Ambition

Working w/ shorter durations--here, eight minutes--allows Hartley to vivify abstraction & to work in a more allegorical register. Sallitt touches on the lovely fact that Hartley's characters are often talented amateur philosophers, & here it's no different. Interestingly enough, in terms of form, Bresson feels like less of a guiding light than in TRUST & TUT. The extended slow-motion climax is absolute sublimity.
