The theme itself maybe didn't relate very well for an Indonesian like me. But in the sentimental side, this movie worked very well with me. AMERICAN HISTORY X isn't just a movie about a man who wanted to have a normal life. There is a lot of important messages in this movie. AMERICAN HISTORY X is also a great movie about a second chance. Edward Norton's portrayal as a Neo-Nazi is really convincing to me...
Interesting in that it seems to give neo-Nazi thought some chance to persuade via charismatic Norton in the first half; it would bave been much easier and standard to put up cartoonish skinhead strawmen rather than the quasi-intellectual true believer. Very shocking scenes of violence and dialogue that doesn't shy away. Terrible, terrible music. Story has too many cliche beats and unbelievable character development.
I can't help but feel that it's a curious film for people to love! Also now, in 2018, a semi-sympathetic portrayal of a damaged neo-Nazi seems feels uncomfortably like a New York Times think piece. However, if you are in a position to watch this and not just find it anathema to your own well-being, this is an intensely realised character study and heartfelt denigration of racism. Unarguably powerful, even when soapy.
