"[Hicks] has been subject to a creeping lionization that has promoted him...into the upper reaches of those all-time greatest lists.... I personally have never had a great deal of time for Hicks's shouty, hectoring comedy–like being trapped in a room with a sociology student who's just drunk a dozen espressos–but this is a really interesting film biography of him." - Andrew Pulver, The Guardian. Loved the animation.
Hicks is worth the hype (mostly--he was a bit too enamored of conspiracy theories), but there's not nearly enough performance footage here, and far too much tacky animation. Also some acknowledgment that the same boldness from which his legend derives could lead to bullying self-righteousness would've been nice.
Love Bill Hicks, but I found the animated photo technique tedious to sit through. Still, well worth watching with a crowd for the second half of the doc, as it's the closest you'll ever come to seeing his stand up with a live audience. It was nice to share the laughs with a room full of strangers.
This documentary does a good job of taking what few pictures and videos of Bill were available to create a visually appealing mobile collage that manages to detail his story fairly well. There is very little stand-up in this film but you learn a lot more about the life of this extremely talented and hilarious individual. But more importantly, we remember that Bill wasn't afraid to ask the real difficult questions.
With the current malaise, ongoing imperialist wars, reactionary attitutudes and even greater media propaganda, people like Bill Hicks are needed more than ever. A fascinating documentary on a man too forthright on unwanted truths to be properly appreciated in his own country.
Superb documentary about a man who truly was larger than life. The photo animation is something different and might not cater to everyone, but it is a bold decision and I consider it far more welcome than the traditional approach. About Bill Hicks, well, he truly is a comic genius and this documentary offers amazing insight on what makes him tick, as well as several good laughs.
