An Angel in Doel

De engel van doel

Directed by Tom Fassaert
Netherlands, Belgium, 2011

The little village of Doel stands in the way of the expanding port of Antwerp. The demolition permit has been granted–the past must make way for the future. Emilienne, a sprightly old lady, sees things differently. She doesn’t want to move–she’s far too happy in her house with its wild garden.

  • GJP's rating of the film An Angel in Doel

I really like how the omnipresent threat of the expanding port is handled in this film. Especially visually. The film doesn't show much of it but when it does, it makes an impact. One shot of the nuclear power plant looming behind the streets is enough to instill its impact on the village. And when the big freighter passes the town in the fog you realize how small the town is and that the end is inevitable...
