Ratings & Reviews

  1. Richmond Hill's rating of the film An Englishman Abroad

Tight and pacey BBC television play with assured playing and a gently barbed script from Bennett. There's barely a wasted moment and this is a good example of a short, but unrushed, approach that belies the sheer professionalism behind it (not least passing British locations off as Russia). Schlesinger's direction is as deft and generous as you'd imagine from such a good all-rounder.

  2. Howard Fritzson's rating of the film An Englishman Abroad

Masterpiece. The best television film I have ever seen. Alan Bates is beyond praise. The script by Alan Bennett is brilliant.
