Ratings & Reviews

  1. Ryan Swen's rating of the film Anamorphosis

    A fiendishly clever documentary.

  2. Michael Henning's rating of the film Anamorphosis

It's not the typical Brothers Quay short, but it is an incredible exploration of art history nevertheless. The theme of inventive techniques in 16th c painting and its connection to reality works simultaneously in contrast and concert with the Quay's own style and technique.

  3. Will Thede's rating of the film Anamorphosis

Not as compelling as the other Quay films I have seen. The Quay's contribution here is outstanding, but the voice over art history lesson adds - while also strangely detracting - from the overall experience.

  4. Jeff Holland's rating of the film Anamorphosis

visually stunning, conceptually fascinating. "Anamorphosis conceals and then discloses the truth that underlies appearances." An idea that could be applied to any form of art.

  5. Shawn Spitler's rating of the film Anamorphosis

  6. Nick Potter's rating of the film Anamorphosis

Perhaps the most straight-forward of all the Quay shorts so far, and yet still a fascinating exercise in surrealism.

  7. Brian Gutierrez's rating of the film Anamorphosis

"Anamorphosis is control of understanding..." that's everything.

  8. David R Williams's rating of the film Anamorphosis

    Lesser Quay...still beautifully done.

  9. Neil troost's rating of the film Anamorphosis

their best work. informative and creative. less interested in being unsettling for unsettling's sake-which is a sad goal of previous films shown.

  10. Samuel Wells's rating of the film Anamorphosis

Stemming from a truly enthralling concept, the film contains a lot of potential. And it delivers on the most basic level of explaining and showcasing what Anamorphosis is. Showcasing this would have been enough to have me enjoy the film, but it was layered under enough facsimile that was unneeded to the message that some of the film was taken away by these distractions. The narration is also imperfect and detracting.

  11. viola.morisi@yahoo.it's rating of the film Anamorphosis

Art can be only described through its own language.

  12. NicD's rating of the film Anamorphosis

Visually rich and interesting--a mildly unsettling art history lesson.

  13. Slappy McGee's rating of the film Anamorphosis

More of a documentary about forced perspective, but told in an offbeat and beautifully animated way. Very interesting to be sure and completely visually arresting.

  14. Wee Hunk's rating of the film Anamorphosis

I was wondering why they didn't show any modern examples, which can be quite spectacular. It occurred to me that they wouldn't necessarily fit within this aesthetic.

  15. Stefan Drees's rating of the film Anamorphosis

A very instructive film about the phenomenon of anamorphosis. As it is primarily focusing on the educational purpose the animations are not as fantastic as in other Quay Brother films.

  16. Nathan Goldman's rating of the film Anamorphosis

Compared to their earlier quasi-nonfiction material on Stravinsky and Janáček, this one is almost disconcerting in its straightforwardly educational nature, yet the Quays do so while still impressively conforming to their own aesthetic and, as they so often do, paying homage to an artistic influence.

  17. Blumes's rating of the film Anamorphosis

This would make a great double feature with Farocki's "Still Life".
