I've long adored the Russian avant-garde... from Kandinsky to Popova to Malevich to Goncharova and so on. Exquisite cinematography, brilliant use of mise en scene, and wonderful art direction. The farcical aspects of modernism clash with the naïveté of tradition, in a whimsical, at times rather amusing bleakness, as the tragic outcome hangs threateningly throughout the entire film. Ekamasova is brilliant
This movie is extremely beautiful, with its natural shots, gorgeous golden light and evocative imagery. I thought it begun with an overly abstract and disconnected action, but it grows throughout its course, with its evocative symbolism that overcomes any action. Awesome score.
