Our take

Winner of the 2017 Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at Cannes, Michel Franco’s April’s Daughter is a prickly portrait of motherhood, teenage pregnancy, and emotionally ruinous family dynamics. Deceptively domestic at first glance, this tale of maternal love shockingly swerves towards the extreme.
