The tone of the film invokes a sweet essence well but as a whole, it ends up being saccharine and there's a lack of substance. The struggle that often makes niceness in characters (or the world) stand out isn't really elaborated on and as such there's little that allows its main character to feel real. It languishes in gushy dream-like territory constantly, though I suppose some may appreciate that far more than I.
This is the third film i've seen by Shunji Iwai and i confess i've liked them all a lot! I really enjoyed watching them, they just convey a realistic feeling; they talk about life in a subtle way, being poetic and touching at the same time.
