Aquaman Directed by James Wan
It’s as elaborate as it is tasteless; it brings to life a story that’s as grandiose as it is inconsequential. Wan works mightily to lend the stiff action flamboyant style, but his garish near-miss proves that there’s only a short misstep from the sublime to the ridiculous.

It takes skill to be as ridiculous as this movie about a half-human, half-Atlantean prince who’s known on land as Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) without seeming to condescend to the material.

It isn’t all dumb fighting and arguing among sea-guys. The movie’s biggest selling points are its affable, bear-hug spirit and its lavish, loopy visuals.

  • Palmat's rating of the film Aquaman

A decent DC flick that settles for CGI spectacle in favour of character drama or development. Momoa is a good actor but he does not give us any deeper insight into Arthur which makes him a throwback to the action heroes from the 80's. The support cast is solid and despite the ridiculous plotting they seem to take things seriously enough to make the characters work. Still nowhere near Wonder Woman!

  • msmichel's rating of the film Aquaman

Solid superhero entry from DC doesn't reach the heights of 'Wonder Woman' but far outshines the rest of the Justice League offerings. Momoa is quite entertaining as the title character here while the rest of the performers mostly let their costumes do the acting. Action set piece after action set piece is almost exhausting as one can certainly see the budget on screen even if the story is somewhat under whelming.

  • Steve Pulaski's rating of the film Aquaman

Wait, you're telling me that when you entrust a massive IP and a nine-figure budget from a much-maligned cinematic universe with someone not named Zack Snyder, the film is actually somewhat enjoyable? "Aquaman" might be hammy and victim to an overstuffed screenplay, but it's a well-conceived testament to what can be done with DC Comics when they tone down the seriousness (and give James Wan a large playing field).

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Aquaman

As "Aquaman" opened with bad wigs, obvious green screen, and Nicole Kidman performing martial arts, I thought, 'whew, we're in trouble.' Fortunately, James Wan eventually finds some kind of equilibrium, and if you're a comic book geek there are a few sights to behold, like Atlantis as a black light poster under the sea, replete with Vangelis-like score. But my sense is that normies won't tolerate 142 minutes of this.

  • Daniel S.'s rating of the film Aquaman

Considering the subject, James Wan did his best. Long time ago, works of art were meant to educate audiences. Now skillful technicians give people what they expect: violence, noise, mythical references nobody understands and words that mean nothing. Already forgotten.

  • Filipe F. Coutinho's rating of the film Aquaman

The only scene with a semblance of horror — the exquisite fight with the trench creatures — is also the film’s strongest, showcasing Wan’s singular vision and where is true talents lie. The Indiana Jones-lite artifact search was also fun. Other than that, it’s the usual superhero fare, with a plot not dissimilar to Black Panther. Momoa might be one of the greatest superhero castings of all time.

  • Andhika Eka Buana's rating of the film Aquaman

I have a high level of tolerance for bad superhero movies. There are just some kind of campy fun silliness from movies like GREEN LANTERN, SUICIDE SQUAD etc. I considered BvS as masterpiece. VENOM had its flaws but it really is one of the best buddy comedy of the year. But with AQUAMAN....I just can't. A complete disaster in every aspects; Momoa's trying-hard-to-be-DC's-THOR, the jokes never landed, and the CGI's...

  • Ethan's rating of the film Aquaman

This was a solid piece of comic book action with stunning visuals and some sarcastic humor. Despite some the corniness they finally made Aquaman badass.
