Ratings & Reviews

  1. Lynch/Fellini's rating of the film Around a Small Mountain

This is almost definitely Jacques Rivette's last film, and it was a nice, meditative way to go out!

  2. Francisco R.'s rating of the film Around a Small Mountain

To me it's the most devastating film in Rivette's oeuvre because of the grand nonnarrative tragedy looming behind the ethereal, ghost-like story. It's the only one of his films to have woken me up at night thinking about its consequences.

  4. mstrschld's rating of the film Around a Small Mountain

This is a beautiful little film yet It's full of anomalies, It’s not at all hard to believe that Rivette was in the initial stages of dementia while making it. The story revolves around a supposedly super-dangerous circus act that when re-enacted at the end of the movie doesn't seem that dangerous at all. The film will, however, cause RV owners to immediately look up the cost of overseas vehicle transport.

  5. Violins By Night's rating of the film Around a Small Mountain

  6. John Baldwin's rating of the film Around a Small Mountain

This is one of those movies that I enjoyed but don't know if I could recommend to anybody. The only reasons to see this are the scenery and Birken's affecting performance. One of Rivette's themes is artifice, but this is *too* artificial, as when the writers lazily have the heroine reveal plot points by talking to a headstone. Of Birken's incredible youthful sexiness, only her sweetness remains, but that's enough.

  7. T. J. Harman's rating of the film Around a Small Mountain

A small little charming film (that will sadly likely be Rivette's last).

  8. Martí Quixal's rating of the film Around a Small Mountain

  9. lina maj's rating of the film Around a Small Mountain

after having seen many movies by Rivette this one seems a tad unexciting, but yet very sweet. it is like visiting your grandfather.

  10. Brad Scott's rating of the film Around a Small Mountain

What is it that makes Jacques Rivette's films such a delight? Wonder, form, humanity and humour.

  11. Mouad Lemoudden's rating of the film Around a Small Mountain

the first film i've seen from director Jacques Rivette. the film centers around a traveling circus playing in mountain villages to very small audiences. the film explore the characters' grief, search, regret and redemption; employing a mixture of drama, whimsical comedy and abstract romance.. i get all that. but unfortunately it didn't speak to me; could be because i'm not accustomed to Rivette's style

  13. guillaume.collin87@gmail.com's rating of the film Around a Small Mountain

A beautiful, naïve and poetic tale around circus and the person that everyone needs to bring back the mise en scene.

  14. tachyon's rating of the film Around a Small Mountain

A little too thin on the subject matter, although it may be because I came in half expecting something in the vein of La Strada :-\

  15. Matthew_Lucas's rating of the film Around a Small Mountain

Awkwardly stagy, frustratingly talky French drama about a chance encounter at a traveling circus. Often very tedious, but the final shot is a knock out.
