A Japanese film with a French title, and just as lightfootedly psychological and en-passant intelligent as French films can be. If the film has a protagonist, then it’s the schoolgirl Sakuko who gets a lot wiser in a single summer vacation. It’s no coincidence that the schoolboy Takashi does too.

A quiet skewering of aspects of Japanese culture seen from the attentive perspective of a young woman. However, even Rohmer afficionados (of whom I am most certainly one) might wish that the film had stuck closer to the 90 minutes or less generally favoured by the maestro.
