This film has some very interesting scenes, but it really doesn't feel like the film I thought I was supposed to be watching. Its all over the place: witches, babies in ice, monks on ancient roller skates, Caravaggio. I mean, what the hell is Caravaggio doing in this film?! For Bathory stories, it doesn't stand up at all to Countess Dracula or even the more recent The Countess.
Utterly barmy. Features a monk like Stephen Fry and another than howls like a wolf when aroused, very heavy handed chess metaphors, Caravaggio wearing a hat with candles on it, a lute being smashed against a wall in a hallucination and a sex scene in a moving confessional. And it's all historically accurate!!!
