I was a bit reticent about the monster being a bird but Herz makes it work wonderfully. His gloomy approach of the tale is impecable as it translates in the environment. The image is perfect, as well as the music. Highly recomended.
There are set pieces that stun and an ambience to rival the best of horror (organ music, foggy moors), but Herz allocates his time to the strangest things. Good when on said set pieces, bad when honouring the myth, given peculiar slow-burn indifference here. Every scene of subversion is consequently undone, disappointing given the stunning art direction 2.5
Even in 70's Czechoslovakia studios were neutering creatives with needless remakes. It's fine and for the four or so inventive minutes actually quite interesting, there is maybe a movie in there, but for the most part far too pat and sincere for me.
