So normally I dislike it when visuals emphatically mirror music that plays on a soundtrack, but in the case of the syncopations of jazz, this strategy ends up working quite well. At times, the film reminded me of Brakhage (before Brakhage) in all its hand-painted glory.
Not a patch on Len Lye, for my money. Neglects abstract plastic qualities in favor of graphic figurative qualities, which work against the musicality of the image. Some fun sequences scattered throughout, but the hodge-podge, like so much of it undermines the basic filmic nature. Great title sequence. Great music choices, though, so too bad McLaren et al didn't rise to the occasion.
