1hr33m39s ... totally wasted. This was one of the worst movies I have seen. I can't believe that a curated site could ever choose such a worthless film. What makes it worse is that this film can be viewed in its entirety on Dailymotion, so what was the point of Mubi offering it? Acting was awful, the plot was goofy, yet predictable. The Mubite who selected it for consideration should be reprimanded -- or fired!
Everyone is entertaining to watch for completely different reasons. Between the dancing nuns, the priest's face when hearing confession, and the way small gestures are given so much conviction the movie really won me. Luciano Tovoli's cinematography, the quick pacing, and the inexplicably windy conditions inside the convent make it seem like the entire thing takes place within a dream.
Unfamiliar with Borowczyk, I was immediately charmed by fast, lush editing and an asynchronous soundtrack (Marker's influence?), right for the titillating subject and even funny. Also, there's an elegant story/fable set-up where what's supposed to happen is clear at the same time every rule is dismantled. Yet the film gets tiresome after, say, 40 minutes, when the best blasphemies start to repeat.
One of the most misunderstood artists in the history of filmmaking. Erotic, sure, but peel back the layers. Like contemporaries Żuławski and Polanski, he fled Poland to a place where he could actually make a statement, with freedom. This is yet another beautiful unfurling of repression release. (Also, he designed all the sets, costumes, not to mention his own film promotion material; genius.) Also, that lighting?!
