Contemptuous attitude against black people, wagon-train pioneer women with make-up & red glossy lips as if they just jumped out of the 'Playboy' magazine, a man who turned from Saulus to Paulus, fake blood & terrrible fake landscape shootings, bad editing, story wholes (do you understand Rock Hudson's character?) It is a 1952 production but the extend of ridiculousness is frightening & laughable at the same time.
Emerson Cole is clearly Glyn McLyntock's alter ego in this movie, he's the man Glyn has to kill Inside him. He may manage to do that once he understands that the important thing is not to cross the river, the mountains or the forest, but to melt into the woods and to follow the course of the river. A Zen movie. Highly recommended.
Much like Winchester '73, Mann deals with human themes such as betrayal and redemption, whilst expertly weaving parallel stories of different groups who interact to form the narrative whole and to develop main character arcs. Great direction, lovely technicolor and a great performance from Stewart at the heart of the film.
