  2. mpho3's rating of the film Beyond the Lights

Star becomes suffocated by stardom, gets rescued by an outsider. Except in Prince-Blythewood's version, the girl is every bit of a match for her rescuer. If anything the woman she is needs only a nudge from her male hero to take things in her own hands. Mbatha-Raw's performance is as fierce as her purple hair (Driver's no slouch either), while the hyperstylized performance segments strike a nerve. 3.5 stars

  5. Christopher M. Jones's rating of the film Beyond the Lights

Augh, so close--what starts out as a very unique and heartfelt romdram becomes borderline nonsense by the film's end. I desperately wanted this to be better than it ended up.

  6. Diderot's rating of the film Beyond the Lights

There's some potential for a good melodrama here, but the script is too superficial and has little respect for its main character. But Minnie Driver is excellent.

  7. Mtume Gant's rating of the film Beyond the Lights

A tropish one dimensional tip toe through Black upper class fantasia with a few white characters to make it "universal". This is the worst of Hollywood, being disingenuous about its self critique and giving you an empty popcorn movie thats "diverse"

  8. Dear Crying,'s rating of the film Beyond the Lights

Its depiction of the pop industrial complex feels dead on. Works as a realistic slice of popstar life; the paperback romance plot was not my bag though.

  10. Cal Cleary's rating of the film Beyond the Lights

This film shouldn't work, but it does. Credit Gugu Mbatha-Raw's star-making performance. Credit Gina Prince-Bythewood's (LOVE & BASKETBALL) gift for smart, sophisticated romance. Credit whatever you want - BEYOND THE LIGHTS is phenomenal.

  11. Dibyajyoti Sarma's rating of the film Beyond the Lights

On paper, the film sounds like a made for TV movie, about a rising young singer finding her true voice, beyond the glamour. On screen, it’s a terrific movie; you cannot turn your eyes from the film, and from its lead actress, Gugu Mbatha-Raw. And the song? Especially the Rita Ora song, Grateful.

  12. msmichel's rating of the film Beyond the Lights

Where in the world was a nomination for Gugu Mbatha-Raw? An incredible performance that surpassed the very fine 'Belle' from the previous year. The film itself lacks in the scripting department but has fine production values and strong performances including those of Nate Parker and Minnie Driver. Strong soundtrack and great costuming by Sandra Hernandez. A major star making turn that deserved better results.

  13. Polyglot's rating of the film Beyond the Lights

Gugu Mbatha-Raw's alluring British accent. ♥_♥

  15. flamingo jones's rating of the film Beyond the Lights

While parts of the film lagged and felt unnecessary (the extended cuddling sequences in Mexico), the message about female pop stardom and its various pressures and tortures is extremely relevant, and Gugu did a great job bringing genuine emotion to her role. The mother-daughter relationship plotline is the most compelling and best executed, though I found the romance story itself charming and engaging.

  16. tylergfoster's rating of the film Beyond the Lights

Especially good at the kind of cause-and-effect character development that is the first thing to go in a bad romance.

  17. Carlos Filipe Freitas's rating of the film Beyond the Lights

The message is clear and valuable, but the film was mounted as an American soap opera with happy ending, where both sentimentality and show-off makes it cheesy enough to run away from it.
