A freewheeling assault on shibboleths great and small, made in the wake of '68's murdered Spring (and including brazen desecration of Slovak national hero Milan Štefánik), BIRDS, ORPHANS AND FOOLS has to be in the running for most subversive divertissement ever directed by a white man. It is tapped into what Věra Chytilová was tapped into, and you may also think of Żuławski's most crazed, unimpeded whirlwinds.
Strictly speaking, this unscrewed film doesn't interest me, but a viewer should take account of the context, historical and social, in which the works are originated and in that sense i am interested in it as an allegory of a libertarian act, a sincere expression of an intention and its contemporary artistic expression - Soviet dictatorship, 60s agit prop & happenings. I do not like, et lasse, the expression itself.
69 erotic year. Noot much sex in this happening movie. This is sympaczech, nothing more. But today it has aged. === 69, année érotique. Bon, pas grand chose d'érotique dans ce film-happening. C'est sympathchèque, sans plus. Aujourd'hui ça ne casse plus 3 pattes à 1 canard.
candles, wardrobes, fur vests :the birds represent 'the souls of the dead' in this dark, carnivalesque frolic, a trio of 'orphans', Yorick, Andrej and Marta, playing games in a crumbling old house, erotic theatricality, and psychedelic 'liberationist' surrealism in the design and editing.
An interesting play on estranging oneself from the madness of the world (and the shadow of the USSR) through foolishness and apparent nonchalant attitudes, similar to Chytilova's "Daisies." “Birds, Orphans and Fools” is yet another classic of the obscure Czech new wave that brings you under into potent yet nuanced blissful delirium. 'Only madness guarantees that you won't remain unhappy.'
