A frankly terrible script almost sinks this effort that tells the mostly true tale of Bruce Lee and Wong Jack Man's meeting and subsequent challenge in '64. The dialogue is atrocious as is the compositing of characters and racial stereotyping throughout. The only saving grace is the actual fight which is well designed and choreographed. While it doesn't tarnish the legend of Lee it doesn't praise him either.
Fairly generic approach to a truly impacting event that changed one of the most recognizable kung fu titans in history. "Birth of the Dragon" is best when it's articulating the conflict between old and new approaches and ideas brought to kung fu, such as discipline vs. pride. Works because it's shorter rather than longer, but Billy Magnussen's fictional character is such an obvious narrative device it's painful.
