Ratings & Reviews

  1. FISCHER's rating of the film Bitter Rice

Chef d'oeuvre du néo-réalisme italien avec la pulpeuse Silvana Mangano dans un scénario étonnant de rigueur et de maîtrise. A voir ou revoir absolument... www.cinefiches.com

  2. Nachtreich's rating of the film Bitter Rice

  3. Lorna Singh's rating of the film Bitter Rice

Along with elements of Film Noir and a love triangle there is a welcome Marxist subtext. It is obvious why Silvana Mangano became a star after this film.

  4. Emil Kurjak's rating of the film Bitter Rice

  5. Fabio Osvaldo Carta's rating of the film Bitter Rice

  6. Christopher McQuain's rating of the film Bitter Rice

  7. CarlosEsquives's rating of the film Bitter Rice

  8. Aardsy's rating of the film Bitter Rice

Hot broads bringing the social issues!

  9. Bram Vroonland's rating of the film Bitter Rice

Bitter Rice is one of those neorealist movies which exemplify the movement going downhill.

  10. Samuel Andrade's rating of the film Bitter Rice

  11. Michael Zyx MH Claes's rating of the film Bitter Rice

MANGANO en cuissardes dans l'eau, pour l'époque c'était très chaud !

  12. Benjamin Bland's rating of the film Bitter Rice

De Santis's stylistic additions to neorealism are significant. Unfortunately there are points in this film in which they rather obscure the message.

  13. Mario Zaragoza's rating of the film Bitter Rice

  14. El Biffo's rating of the film Bitter Rice

A little something for everyone in this sexy/marxist/crime drama. Recommended for fans of post-war Italian cinema!

  15. Cinema Paradisio's rating of the film Bitter Rice

What is about Italian women? Belissimo

  17. Lynch/Fellini's rating of the film Bitter Rice

My first Giuseppe De Santis film…. I thought it was absolutely wonderful!

  18. nouvelle vague 1960's rating of the film Bitter Rice

Neorealism meets the original Italian sex bomb! Before there was Gina Lollobrigida and Sophia Loren, there was Silvana Mangano.A film ostensibly about the exploitation of women rice-field workers in the Po valley(cue socialist sentiments from hero/army sergeant Marco). The film quickly becomes a delicious melodrama, of sex and violence. Mangano in those shorts, women fighting in mud,a shoot out and a suicide.Terrific!

  19. Adam Suraf's rating of the film Bitter Rice

Sexy Silvana Mangano became internationally known after this peudo neorealist melodrama found an audience, thanks in part to her husband Dino Di Laurentiis's money, and the skimpy outfits he makes Giuseppe De Santis direct her in. Master cameraman Otello Martelli's sweeping shots of hundreds of women in rice paddy's is justly famed.

  20. Yusef's rating of the film Bitter Rice

  21. Maascha's rating of the film Bitter Rice

  22. Robert Regan's rating of the film Bitter Rice

There's a lot more going on here than all those bare-legged women working in the rice paddies, but that's enough to get started.
