What the hell is this? An anti-booze noir parable, where Dan Duryea plays a good guy and Peter Lorre is a menacing kingpin? Well, so it appears, but watch carefully. The ending's a copout, but Duryea's performance is astonishing throughout.
**1/2. Average, but with some interesting travellings à la Hitchcock and Constance Dowling during 10 minutes. One could say that the last 15 minutes save the film because until then the screenplay is much too linear. Almost already forgotten though.
