BLACK RAIN is really an underrated movie from director Ridley Scott. When I was watching this movie, some weird thoughts popped up in my mind. I guess, BLACK RAIN is Ridley Scott's effort to make a stylish action movie like his brother - Tony Scott. In the end, this movie feels like a William Friedkin's kind of movie. I didn't say it was bad. It's a good thing, of course. BLACK RAIN is an amazing crime-thriller movie
Michael Douglas really suits the role, but what makes this film good is it's great scenery shots and the cinematography by Jan de Bont that has echoes of "Blade Runner" to it. Sadly, the film doesn't take any risks with the material and the showdown is predictable. Still, an average directed Ridley Scott movie is better to watch than an average directed film by Brett Leonard.
Disappointing. One of Ridley Scott's weakest movies. Totally unconvincing story. Too much, overmotivated Michael Douglas. Very much predictable. Too little tension, very little thrill. Bad dialogues. It's a pity but overall boring movie. 1,5 stars, can't give more.
maybe it deserves more, but having in mind i fell asleep twice trying to watch it, felt irritated by looking at the D&B duo and actually every sloppy character in the film...no, just no. the screenplay and i'm guessing the idea of making a somewhat smarter, more serious version of an action flick turned out to be a mix containing many shades of assholeism and silliness. this one really sucked the life out if me
A great old gem of a movie. It might feel a bit slight compared to Scotts other efforts but both Douglas and Garcia works the script for all it´s worth. The visuals and the score are astounding and the action set pieces are pretty cool. A true guilty pleasure in my book.
I could've overlooked the horrible screenplay/lackluster direction (not a bad look to the film overall though, superficially), but the constant barrage of American arrogance was so incredibly grating that it killed any potential this film might have had otherwise - it's shoved down your throat at every opportunity. The development of the plot is horrendous, lacking any basis in reality at all. Wear thick gloves.
The one star is for the oyabun's bitter speech about surviving WWII bombings and the titular black rain. Inexplicably, the screenplay fails to pursue this theme of post-war tension, opting instead for false and insulting cultural stereotypes. The renegade cop as hero is a childish Hollywood trope that needs to be permanently retired.
