Even the obnoxious as hell way James Cagney says "hooooooney" in this movie (which made me hate him on sight in a way that took like 10 more Cagney films to cure) can't dampen my love for it. He's sassy, Joan Blondell is even more sassy, everyone is a crook, and I love it enormously. And she slaps him a lot, which is only fitting because god damn it I hate the way he says "hooooooney"!!!!!
this was so sweet and usually i am a bitter person... similar to lubitsch's trouble in paradise, i love seeing female crooks portrayed as well-rounded and complete honest people capable of balancing independence and loyalty before the woman-hating alcoholic screenwriters of the 1940s got their hands on them
