João Eça's rating of the film Blood and Sand

Love, poverty, fear, greed, ignorance, betrayal, faith, forgiveness and death, all wrapped in the rise and fall cycle of bullfighters. An intriguing melodrama from one of Hollywood's intellectuals (Mamoulian) it has the most breathtaking colour - referential of spanish painture (El Greco, Zurbaran, Goya, Velasquez) - and an expressive combination of metonymic, subjective or omniscient shots. Odd but compelling.
