Spielbergs direction is solid but somehow this periodpiece seems dated. We have seen stories like this many times before;a lawyer how takes upon himself his greatest case at the cost of his family and country.I couldn't help thinking of Kevin Costner in JFK or Gregory Peck in TKAMB who takes this kind of role further than Mr.Hanks.This film would be a hit 20years ago.Cold War?what about something contemporary Steven?
How to turn an inherently gripping tale into a chore to watch? Spielberg strips this Coen Bros penned script of its wit and absurd humor to deliver a toothless film, marked by dullness and schmaltz..Further proof of the Academy's investment in celebrating the mediocre.
Classical Hollywood craftsmanship finds resurgence in the formally elegant "Bridge of Spies." While it may in some ways feel more stately, less alive than Steven Spielberg's other recent historical films such as "Munich," this "Bridge" still deserves to be treasured for the simple fact that films like this - with its lineage in film noir and the work of Frank Capra - may not see production in another decade.
this was a very odd, totally enjoyable film experience. there were some clear jarring style choices between the Coen's and Spielberg, but those only added to the charm. Spielberg's best in a long time. A 'feel good' Cold War noir... and it worked. Mark Rylance was superb as the caustic, genteel Soviet spy.
This is not a thriller, action, drama or spy movie. It is a quiet rather than loud movie. It is about certain values you must possess during the time of Cold War, if you want to achieve results. It is about a person, who is dedicated to law & justice, to his profession, to his dignity and who becomes a symbol for persistency, patience, intelligence & seriousness. Great Tom Hanks. Interesting & entertaining. Solid.
