We don't tend to see radical political import in American movies that are celebratory and populist. Extremely impressive that Mr. Reed's film convinces the viewer (well, this viewer) that much of what me might tend to reflexively view as insipid in American culture is actually totally wonderful. I'm glad I waited fifteen years to see it. I used to take myself pretty seriously. That being said: take it seriously.
Makes you want to be a cheerleader, and that's no small task. Beautiful cast doing beautiful routines within a tried-and-true sports competition story-arc that just works. My biggest complaint is that the romance was entirely unnecessary and detracted from an otherwise tight and entertaining script.
