While inferior to John Woo's Hong Kong action films he still manage to treat the film nicely with a visual style, editing and fast action that makes this perfect popcorn action. Samantha Mathis is pretty likable as tough action heroine even Christian Slater is acceptable throughout here trying to stop an atom-bomb to be stolen. John Travolta clearly enjoy himself playing a evil person and has the best lines.
John Woo's second movie in Hollywood. He puts more biggest cast than his previous work. There are John Travolta and Christian Slater. This movie suffered from mediocre script and character development (some say that it's because there's a studio's inteference). But John Woo is a talented director. Just like HARD TARGET (1993), He can turn a bad script into a highly entertaining movie. It's entertaining!
Dull, pitiful and fully revealing of how much work was done on the script of SPEED in order to make that film have some life to it. (Which it had very little of.) This picture runs on autopilot, save for only the action staging, and when the leads sink their teeth in which is far too infrequent. A terrible waste.
