one of the most interesting films about the ambiguity of america and the celebration of the west that i've ever seen. if it was a peckinpah film, we'd have violence symbolizing the death of the american ideal. but it's not, and in Bronco Billy we have comedy, irony and self-parody as a way to celebrate the american dream in a group of outcasts that live in a country that stands no longer for what they believe in.
Uneven comedy is an offbeat offering coming from Eastwood, who is great in the lead, but as a director isn't quite the right fit for this kind of comedy, especially when it comes to the more far-fetched aspects of the plot. But there are some well-drawn characters and Eastwood cleverly undermines his iconic image. One of Eastwood's more interesting, but not so successful efforts.
