This is a parody of two "Carmen"s, Bizet’s opera and a movie (1915) starring Geraldine Farrar. Smugglers come ashore. Their leader sends the gypsy Carmen to lure Don Jose (called Darn Hosiery) away so they can get the contraband to town.

A great and breezy early Chaplin film; the laughs here are delivered keenly. His classic comedic expressionism carries a lot of this parody, along with a cheeky running gag where everyone keeps tripping over the same rock and a hilarious ending that has elements of black comedy and even interestingly enough seems to break the fourth wall.
