An hidden gem that I had overlooked as a result of that pesky 'Oscar hype' tag. Absolutely underrated film. This is not merely Aniston's finest role to date, it is one of the best female role of the 10s. And yet so overlooked. I loved that it was not sentimental or hysterical. That it did not resort to corny flashbacks or sentimental blackmail.
Honestly, people are taking the cake metaphor the absolute wrong way. Yes, life has layers like a cake, but the symbolism of the birthday cake is so much stronger if one looks at it as the promise of a brighter tomorrow regardless of one's current circumstance. "It doesn't matter" what you wish for as long as you keep on wishing. Brilliant.
There are some slow spots in Cake for sure, but I believe that's what makes it effective. Aniston is riveting in this dramatic role, a rarity for her as an actress, and I would not be surprised if it lands her an Oscar nom. The cinematography is also quite lovely and gives a feel to the film that is very warm. Story-wise it is solid, never giving too much away, and leaving just enough for the audience to figure out.
It is purposely measured for Aniston to pull off her strongest make-up free depressing performance ever. But if this is capable of anything at all, that isn't it. It feels unremarkable and prickly, making it almost impossible for it to be enjoyable. Moreover, there's an unfortunate shallowness and lack of depth beneath all that set-up of a narrative that quickly made me think I could've spent my money elsewhere.
despite being filled with cliched characters - the loyal Mexican maid, the caring but alienated ex-husband, the teenage runaway - there are some very good performances in it, especially Anna Kendrick and Felicity Huffman. As for Jennifer Aniston, she's also good, but the role she's forced to play places too much emphasis on physical pain which ultimately is distracting. And kudos for not being afraid to portay anger

Quite nihilistic but deserves a conscientious watch. Aniston and Barraza have an impressive timing on their performances.Daniel Barnz directing is outstanding, as it is Rachel Morrison's cinematography. Some of the sequences are so subtle and beautiful enough to make this movie a must watch.
