Our take

Is this Altman’s most unfairly neglected ‘70s film? That’s what happens to a movie sandwiched between such masterpieces as The Long Goodbye and Nashville! A glorious return to comedy, this hard-boiled portrait of a friendship tests American values with unassuming skill and disarming authenticity.
