Ratings & Reviews

  1. tyb's rating of the film Calvary

Solemn and sincere, beautiful both visually and in terms of writing, the dialogue in particular is perfect and delivered expertly by an overall outstanding cast. The movie, and especially the ending, stays with you for a long time.

  5. James Mackin's rating of the film Calvary

The Church really needs all the help it can get nowadays. It's a dying breed.

  6. nietzschicharonsky's rating of the film Calvary

i was xpekting it to be a serious drama

  7. the_mentaculus's rating of the film Calvary

An excellent film, as poignant as it is timely. McDonagh finds a really deft balance between beauty, jet black comedy and a touch of the macabre - basically, it's that time a character pisses on Holbein the Younger's The Ambassadors. What it asks about the forgotten role of the Priesthood in our times - and the forgotten role of forgiveness - lingers in my head.

  8. Elle Johnston's rating of the film Calvary

    Utterly harrowing. A complete experience.

  9. yelloww's rating of the film Calvary

  10. fearraigh's rating of the film Calvary

McDonagh has more elevated notions here than he had in The Guard but the film is every bit as bad. Full of crap setpieces built around a starry cast, Calvary is clueless, witless and a stereotypically poor Irish film.

  11. Howard Orr's rating of the film Calvary

Hugely disappointing; an interesting premise, beautiful Irish setting, and strong central performance, but the writing for the secondary characters is appallingly sloppy. Bergman's "Winter Light" made with a care for character development of an episode of "Midsomer Murders". 1.5*

  12. Arandhitio Ballagi's rating of the film Calvary

  13. Gianpiero Mendini [cineddoche]'s rating of the film Calvary

  15. Leif Erikson's rating of the film Calvary

No-one ever says the word 'death' around you any more.

  16. cinegeek.de's rating of the film Calvary

  17. katiestgeorge@gmail.com's rating of the film Calvary

One of the worst films I've ever watched.

  18. Victor Rodrigues's rating of the film Calvary

  19. Mark Tallo's rating of the film Calvary

Pretty good. Such beauty surrounded by such sadness.

  20. Kyra W's rating of the film Calvary

A solid, poignant film with surprising powerful performances from the supporting cast, O'Dowd especially. It was just very beautiful, polished, and extremely well-crafted all the way around. An interesting, down-to-Earth perspective of such a difficult subject.

  21. Jo's rating of the film Calvary

"There’s no point in killing a bad priest. But killing a good one? That’d be a shock, now. They wouldn’t know what to make of that. I’m going to kill you, Father. I’m going to kill you ‘cause you’ve done nothing wrong. I’m going to kill you ‘cause you’re innocent."

  22. Chris's rating of the film Calvary

superb acting, music, and cinematography; deals with many issues regarding religion in a very personal manner. 9/10

  23. l1inous's rating of the film Calvary

A fresh take on the classic 'whodunit', not only by being a 'wholldoit' but by making the question 'wholldoit' almost insignificant. Instead Michael McDonagh gives us a great cast of extraordinary, sometimes hilarious characters, lead by the great Brendan Gleeson, in a very intimate and personal movie about faith, love and loss.

  24. Fabio Di Felice's rating of the film Calvary
