The ambitious, innocent Carrie in the late 1890s arrives in Chicago’s South Side and stays with her nagging dullish married sister. She then runs for help to traveling salesman Charles Drouet. She soon becomes his mistress, but falls in love with married restaurant manager George Hurstwood.

*** 1/2. This adaptation of the classic Theodore Dreiser novel got only two nominations for the Academy awards. I can understand why. Carrie is not a melodrama, it's pure social drama and there is no happy ending here. William Wyler's mise en scene is sumptuous. Recommended.
If anyone had a doubt that a great stage actor could make the transition to film, they should watch this. Olivier is so magnificent that he envelops you. I have seen his Shakespearean film performances and they don't come close.
