Didn't expect much from this one and was very pleasantly surprised. The Abramoff story should be a cautionary one but it just isn't as the hill is full of guys just like him. He's just the one who got caught. Kevin Spacey and Barry Pepper just perfect casting. Was sorry to hear about Hickenlooper's passing last year, loved his documentary Hearts of Darkness but never felt his fiction films ever matched it. RIP
It's like Hickenlooper wanted to make his own version of Soderbergh's THE INFORMANT, but just couldn't pull it off. Most of the actors (esp. Spacey) vacillate between being in on the joke and just pretending they are, Jon Lovitz is miscast in a role that looks (on paper) to be right up his alley, the "I'M BEING WHIMSICAL" soundtrack is obnoxious, and the script / direction either pulls its punches or over-swings.
