Good opening scene, but the enclosing atmosphere of doom never feels quite threatening to the Francis character, as there's not any sense of something sinister following her as it did for others mentioned in the plot. This also means she believes in her impending doom through magic much too easily. The resolution with the returning of the incantation also comes out of the blue, lacking insight into its procedure.
An expansion for this Director away from his shorter BBC Ghost Stories for Christmas which, despite some crudely achieved effects (less should be more with this author), manages to be a credible rendering of James. The modernisation of setting doesn't detract greatly and a rare 'just desserts' conclusion rounds things off nicely.
